DPR collects evidence on SBU secret prison in Mariupol

Comments and statements of the Ombudsman Media News

Human Rights Ombudsman in the Donetsk People’s Republic Daria Morozova reported that  DPR authorities gather information on a Ukrainian secret prison in Mariupol Airport, provided that the evidence is sufficient, this issue may be raised on the international level.

It was previously reported that RIA Novosti had found new documented evidence of the existence of the Ukrainian secret prison in Mariupol. It was used by “Azov” battalion (Ukrainian right-wing group; many of its leaders and members are under criminal prosecution in the Russian Federation) under tacit patronage of SBU. The details of the investigation will be published in several parts.

“Now we are accumulating information, reports on the secret prison, bring in to the knowledge of international organizations, namely, ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross – Ed.) and the UN Human Rights Commissioner,” said Ms Morozova to RIA Novosti.

According to her, “as soon as this information is gathered, and enough evidence of the existence of this secret institution will be found, this issue will be brought (to discussion – Ed.) in the framework of the Minsk process (on peaceful settlement in Donbass – Ed.) and beyond, because such a case would constitute a breach of the Geneva convention (on treatment of prisoners – Ed.) and the international humanitarian law.”

The Ombudsman specified that DPR authorities approached international organizations in a hope that they would, in their part, participate in the investigation of reports on the Ukrainian secret prison. She believes that this case will follow the same scenario like the one in Kharkov, where there was found evidence of a secret prison.

Replying to the question of whether the issue was raised at the Minsk negotiations of Contact Group on peaceful settlement in Donbass on Wednesday, she said that the Contact group and the Humanitarian Subgroup are currently focused on organizing the prisoner exchange.
