News Overview of the social and humanitarian situation

On November 17 the International Students’ Day is celebrated in many countries of the world. On this day students commemorate victims of the fascist regime and express their strong protest against unleashing of new bloody wars.

The history of this day has its roots in the events of October 28, 1939, in Czechoslovakia, occupied by German invaders, when students and their teachers went to a demonstration in Prague to celebrate an anniversary of establishment of the state (October 28, 1918). Then the units of the invaders dispersed the demonstration, and a student of the Medical Faculty Jan Opletal was shot. The funeral of Jan Opletal on November 15, 1939, turned into another protest. On November 17, mass arrests and clean-ups began. More than 1,200 students were imprisoned in the concentration camp in Sachsenhausen. Nine students and activists of the student movement were executed without trial in the prison of Ruzyne district of Prague. By order of Hitler, all Czech higher educational institutions were closed until the end of the war. The International Students’ Day was established at the International Students Congress to commemorate these events.

Young, active, resilient and purposeful specialists are always the hope of society and the state.

«The Donetsk People’s Republic is a young and developing state. We place emphasis on youth, on students. You are our future. And you are actively involved in the establishment of our state.

Studentship is one of the most beautiful periods in the one’s life. It is a time of dreams and ambitions, creativity and inspiration. It is a time of hard work, understanding the world and finding your way.

Each one of you is the creator of your own destiny. But altogether you are the future of our Republic. The pivot of its development and prosperity, the hope for new achievements and a step forward,” the Head of the Republic Alexander Zakharchenko congratulated the students.
