Statement from Daria Morozova on killing of Roman Dzhumaev

Comments and statements of the Ombudsman News

Lawlessness, violence and arbitrariness, which are predominant in Ukraine, have gone beyond reason. The terrorist methods used against dissenting people are already becoming systemic and cause fear for the lives of civilians in the territory of Ukraine.

As reported in open sources, on September 16, Roman Dzhumaev, who was under house arrest, was killed in his own apartment in Mariupol. Earlier, law enforcement agencies of Ukraine charged him as a supporter of the Donetsk People’s Republic, so Roman Dzhumaev was included in the list of persons to be exchanged. Such a cynical murder demonstrates the disregard of human rights and freedoms, the complete laissez-faire and failure to observe the Ukrainian legislation.

I cannot but state an increase in cases of violence based on political differences, which have been observed in Ukraine lately. Recently, I have sent appeals to international organizations regarding the brutal murder of a person with a disability, whose whereabouts have been concealed for a long time by the Ukrainian authorities.

This incident occurred on the eve of the meeting in Minsk, and tomorrow I will raise the issue of ensuring the safety of persons to be exchanged. I will definitely inform the Coordinator of the Humanitarian Subgroup, Mr. Frisch, about what has happened and about my concern regarding the fate of supporters of the Donetsk People’s Republic who are now in the territory of Ukraine.
