STATEMENT BY DARIA MOROZOVA ON FATE OF AMERICAN MERCENARY ALAN JOSHUA

Comments and statements of the Ombudsman News

Despite numerous warnings from the Russian Federation and the DPR, citizens of a number of Western countries continue to arrive in Ukraine in order to participate in the war against the civilian population of Donbass. Moreover, the thirst for profit blinds these persons so much that they obviously do not realize the seriousness of the consequences of such steps.

Thus, on August 23, during the fighting in the area of the settlement of Yegorovka, the servicemen of the DPR People’s Militia liquidated another foreign mercenary fighting on the side of Ukraine. Fleeing, the AFU militants simply left his corpse at the battlefield.

Deceased had documents in the name of a US citizen, a native of Memphis, Alan Joshua, born in 1998. The body was sent to one of the morgues of the DPR.

Unlike Ukraine, we remain committed to the principles of humanism even in relation to our enemies. US officials notified of the death of Alan Joshua. We also confirm our readiness to hand over his remains to his relatives for burial.

I also informed representatives of international human rights organizations about the incident and about the readiness to hand over the body, in particular, the Head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine Matilda Bogner.

In addition, I would like to remind once again that mercenaries are not combatants and are not subject to international humanitarian law. Such persons are deprived of any “immunity” in the conduct of hostilities. And I strongly recommend that all foreign citizens who arrived in Ukraine for militaristic purposes immediately leave the territory of this state. Otherwise, no one will bear responsibility for their life and safety.
