Detention Media News

The secret prisons of the Security Service of Ukraine and the Ukrainian volunteer battalions operated not only in Mariupol, but throughout the contact line in Donbass, as well as in other cities of Ukraine, including Kharkov, Kramatorsk and Krasnoarmeisk. The information has been reported by former prisoners and confirmed by MIA of Ukraine, UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine and Amnesty International organization.

Kramatorsk

Alla Belousova and Vladimir Belousov from Enakievo told RIA Novosti that they fell into the hands of the SBU and spent some period of time in the airport of Kramatorsk. There they were beaten. Also, the wardens planned to organize the rape of Alla Belousova by another detainee. This person was another resident of Enakievo Konstantin Afonchenko, who spoke about applying a chainsaw as a method of torture. According to him, there was such a practice in Kramatorsk to send prisoners to mined areas.

Afonchenko also noted that he later recognized a Maidan activist Vsevolod Steblyuk and the future Verkhovna Rada deputy Andrei Teteruk in photographs of his torturers.

Earlier, a former prisoner of a secret prison in Mariupol airport, Kirill Filichkin, in a video interview to RIA Novosti told that the current Rada deputies Oleg Lyashko and Igor Mosiychuk personally interrogated him, and the latter also tortured him.

Krasnoarmeisk

Another secret prison might still operate in the town of Pokrovsk (formerly Krasnoarmeisk), in a road transport enterprise 11-411 at 7 Dniprovskaia Str., said a former prisoner of this jail Sergei Babich. He was detained on March 25, 2015, a press release about his detention appeared on the official website of the SBU.

In addition, the protocol of detention was only issued on March 31. When he was admitted to the SIZO, the doctors found numerous hematomas on his body, which is confirmed by a certificate from the detention centre.

“In the territory controlled by the government, the practices of arbitrary arrest or incommunicado detention were widely used in 2014, 2015 and 2016, whereas in 2017 and 2018 we documented only a few cases,” the Head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine Fiona Frazer told RIA Novosti.

Kharkov

According to the HRMM, the prison, where people were held in inappropriate conditions, operated in the Kharkov Security Service of Ukraine, the UN identified the names of 184 persons who, according to the mission, were illegally detained in the building of Kharkov SBU Office in 2014-2016.

Data on the SBU prison in Kharkov is also confirmed by the representative of Amnesty International organization in Ukraine Maria Gurieva.

To make them more “cooperative”

The SBU taught the nationalist radicals and workers of the Ukrainian police how to identify supporters of the DPR and potential whistleblowers in Donbass, a former investigator of the Mariinka district department of MIA in Donetsk region told RIA Novosti. He asked to change his name fearing for his life.

According to him, the leaders of SBU response force tasked their subordinates to conduct checks in apartments and detached houses in the residential sector of the city and district to identify the persons involved in the activities of the DPR military units as well as those engaged in organizing the referendum of May 11, 2014.

In addition, he said they were instructed to search for taxi drivers and farmers from Donetsk, who often drive to the Ukrainian side, for example, in order to sell the harvest and who are “ready to gather information in the territory of the DPR” because of their pro-Ukrainian political position or for self-interest. Apart from information, they demanded money from farmers “because they are financing terrorists”.

“As directed by employees of the SBU response force, the drivers were first sent to volunteer battalions, and then to the response force of the SBU,” detailed the former employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. According to him, volunteer battalions like “Azov” (the Ukrainian far-right group, criminal cases were initiated in the Russian Federation on many of its leaders and members) had to “work” with the detainees in order to make them more eager to cooperate.
