Representatives of DPR Ombudsman Office conduct inspection in Yenakievo penal colony

Representatives of DPR Ombudsman Office together with representatives of State Penitentiary Service of the DPR Ministry of Justice carried out inspection of the conditions of detention of persons serving sentences in Yenakievo penal colony. They also paid special attention to observance of convicts’ rights by the administration of the facility. At the time of the visit, 427 convicts have been serving their sentences in the facility. Its capacity is 600 persons.

As part of the inspection, human rights defenders met the executives of the correctional colony and discussed prisoners’ living conditions, cultural and disciplinary issues, as well as medical treatment, education and employment of prisoners in conditions of the correctional facility.

Representatives of the Human Rights Ombudsman noted the improvements made since the previous visit. The penitentiary institution has done renovation in a canteen and residential sections, as well as refurbishment in a sanitary unit.

Also, the human rights defenders conducted a personal reception for the convicts. There were questions about the procedure of filing a petition for a pardon, an unlawful criminal prosecution and changing of the regime of detention. The prisoners were given legal advice and clarification of the norms of the current legislation.

During the interviews, there were no complaints regarding the actions of the administration of the facility, as well as inappropriate detention conditions or lack of necessary medical assistance.

As a result of the inspection, representatives of DPR Ombudsman gave a positive assessment of detention conditions in the Yenakievo correctional colony, as well as the observance of convicts’ rights by the administration of the facility.
