Representatives of DPR Ombudsman Office conduct inspection in Snezhnoe correctional colony

Staff of DPR Ombudsman Office carried out inspection of the conditions of detention of persons serving sentences in Snezhnoe correctional colony. They also paid special attention to the observance of convicts’ rights by the administration of the facility. At the time of the visit, 153 convicts have been serving their sentences in the facility. Its capacity is 350 persons.

Staff of the Ombudsman Office met the executives of the Snezhnoe correctional colony and discussed prisoners’ living conditions, cultural and disciplinary issues, as well as medical treatment, education and employment of prisoners in conditions of the prison.

Representatives of the Ombudsman Office conducted a personal reception for 12 inmates.  The human rights defenders gave advice and clarification on the legal grounds to be transferred to the territory of Ukraine, and the norms of the current legislation related to early release, appealing against court decisions and deprivation of parental rights.

As regards issues demanding further consideration, four written appeals were accepted for further review by the DPR Ombudsman within her competence.

As a result of the inspection, staff of DPR Ombudsman Office gave a positive assessment of detention conditions in the Snezhnoe correctional colony, as well as the observance of convicts’ rights by the administration of the facility.
