Living conditions in Donetsk Children’s Home No.1 “Teremok” given positive assessment

Representatives of the DPR Human Rights Ombudsman Office conducted an inspection of the educational process and living conditions in the Donetsk Children’s Home No.1 “Teremok” At the moment, 54 children aged 3-7 years old live in the institution. They are orphans and children deprived of parental care.

There is a main two-storey building and facilities for maintenance purposes (a laundry, a garage and warehouses). The main building has bedrooms, playrooms, a music and sports hall, a swimming pool, infra-red sauna, sensory therapy room, a medical unit with a physiotherapy room. A canteen, a dining unit and other premises. Outside there is a football field, a playground and a basketball court.

One of the basic tasks of the Children’s home is to prepare children for school. For that purpose, with due consideration of children’s individual needs, general education programmes and additional programmes for pre-school education are used.   Special attention is paid to preserving and strengthening the health of the students, development of personality and education of such qualities as active social life, creative approach, respect to traditional cultural values and patriotism.

In order to help students socialize, classes are held in the social adaptation room, which is a reduced copy of a modern kitchen with the necessary equipment. There, students learn to cook simple dishes, set a table, learn etiquette, have tea parties and celebrate birthdays. Trips to various public places are organised (shops, pharmacies, post offices etc.) to demonstrate how they operate and how to use them.

Under the guidance of educators, students develop drawing skills, master arts and crafts techniques, such as application, modular origami, quilling, and others, painting pictures together with artists whose collaborate with the institution. There is a special room where children read fairy tales. A psychologist uses elements of art therapy, a finger theatre and a puppet theatre.

Physical health of students is under permanent supervision of medical staff. There are a paediatrician and a dentist in the institution. Specialist physicians carry out complex medical screening of the children twice a year.

As a result of the inspection, education and living environment for children in the Donetsk Children’s Home No.1 “Teremok” received a positive assessment from staff of DPR Ombudsman Office.
