Since 2009, the World Day of Social Justice is celebrated annually in accordance with the resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations. On this day, the UN member states carry out activities that contribute to eradicating poverty, providing people with decent working conditions, achieving well-being and equality, and establishing universal social justice in all its forms and manifestations.
These issues are particularly relevant for countries where armed conflicts are continuing. The problems of a social and humanitarian nature, restrictions on freedoms and violation of human rights are particularly acute in the conditions of military confrontation.
The coup d’état of 2014 in Ukraine not only caused hostilities in Donbass, but also discrimination against all those who, according to political, national, cultural, religious and other characteristics, do not fit the format of the “new Ukrainian state”. Persecution and harassment by government agencies and security forces coupled with acts of intimidation and violence are committed by activists of radical groups. At the same time, the latter often remains unpunished and, moreover, is sometimes supported by authorities.
Such influential international organizations as the United Nations devoted particular attention to these and other concerns related to deterioration of the human rights situation in their reports. Providing information about the facts of offences, as well as informing the world community on these issues are some of the important activities of the Human Rights Ombudsman in the Donetsk People’s Republic.
Along with efforts to resolve the conflict in Donbass through the Minsk negotiating process, the activities of the Ombudsman are aimed at protecting the rights of citizens of the Republic and those persecuted for loyalty to the DPR, as well as at restoring social justice, equality and legitimacy.
