DPR Ombudsman says Klimkin’s statement on Donbass status is speculation

DPR Ombudsman Daria Morozova considers the statement by the Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin on the extension of the special status of Donbass to be speculation.

Earlier, Klimkin had claimed that it was almost impossible to implement the law on special status of Donbass as it stands.

“The special status and its extension is a political issue, and the release of detainees and amnesty are humanitarian ones. They must be implemented simultaneously… I believe this is a political trick. This is speculation and I cannot understand this statement. Ukraine is searching for new reasons so as not to extend the status,” said Morozova in the interview.

In October 2017, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine extended the law on the special status of Donbass for one year. The law says that a special status of the region will come into effect after a number of conditions will be met, in particular, the withdrawal of “illegal groups” from these territories. In August, the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, Andrei Parubiy, said that the decision to extend the law will largely depend on the position of international partners. Last week, Special Representative of the US Department of State for Ukraine Kurt Volker again urged Kiev to extend the law on the special status of Donbass.
