DPR Ombudsman hopes UN document casualties on territorial basis in Donbass

Comments and statements of the Ombudsman Media News

Ombudsman of the Donetsk People’s Republic Daria Morozova expressed the hope that the UN will keep a record of death toll separately in the territories of the Republics and in the Kiev-held territory.

Earlier, the Ombudsman’s Office reported that since the outbreak of the conflict in the DPR, 4,884 people have died, including 81 children.

“I looked through the data provided by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission. They present the total number, without specifying the share of military personnel of Ukraine and of peaceful citizens of DPR and LPR. If they could separate these figures, then that would be good … We have repeatedly discussed the breakdown by territory, but I think that someday it will be done,” Morozova said.

In April 2014, the Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the LPR and the DPR, which declared independence after the coup d’etat in Ukraine in February 2014. According to the latest UN data, about 13 thousand people became victims of the conflict. The issue of resolving the situation in Donbass is under discussion, including through the meetings of the Contact Group in Minsk, which, since September 2014, has already adopted three documents regulating steps to de-escalate the conflict. However, even after armistice agreements between the parties to the conflict, exchange of fire continues.
