The UN human rights monitoring mission has published statistics on victims of the conflict in the east of Ukraine. According to UN experts, between April 2014 and late 2018 from 12,800 to 13,000 persons have been killed in Donbass.
According to them, 3,300 killed were civilians, 4,000 killed were servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and 5,500 killed were servicemen of the People’s Republics in Donbass. About 27 or 30 thousand people were injured during this time. According to the statistics presented, 55 civilians were killed and 224 were injured in Donbass in 2018.
The federal news agency discussed these figures with representatives of the DPR Human Rights Ombudsman in the Donetsk People’s Republic Daria Morozova.
According to the Ombudsman’s representative, the UN presented total figures, without dividing into Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.
“This includes the DPR, the LPR and the territory of Ukraine. Civil plus military. Therefore, the UN always has high figures,” the FAN source said.
According to representatives of the DPR Ombudsman Office, since the beginning of the conflict in the Donetsk People’s Republic, 4,729 persons lost their lives, including 81 children. At the same time, in 2018, 162 persons died (of them, 18 civilians, including 5 children).
“In addition, in 2018, 310 persons, of whom 108 were civilians, including two children, were injured,” as informed in the DPR.
The source noted that there is no accurate statistics for 2014 and 2015. At the same time, as specified in the Ombudsman’s Office, the situation with prisoners is rather complicated, as Ukraine denies holding many of them in custody.
“The Ukrainian side officially confirmed holding some persons in custody.
But there are other persons held in Ukrainian prisons, although Ukraine refused to confirm that. In the meantime, international monitors visited them, so this is an inarguable fact, but Ukraine still keeps them in the dark.”
As of 20 January 2019, the Ukrainian side holds 272 persons. Ukraine confirmed only 104 of them. But we know that other 168 persons are there as well,” said the source.
There are 455 persons (military and civilians), who went missing in connection with the conflict.
The figure has not been divided, because it was almost impossible to identify if a person was civilian or not. For example, there were people standing next to a checkpoint, or passing by, or bringing medicines there. They are civilians, but can be counted as servicemen.
This is a general figure. Again, we cannot exclude the possibility that some of these people might be in Ukrainian prisons now,” said the source from the DPR Human Rights Ombudsman Office.
