Donetsk People’s Republic transfers convicts to Ukraine

On September 14, 2017, 19 convicts serving sentences in confinement institutions of the Donetsk People’s Republic, who expressed a desire to serve their sentences in Ukrainian penitentiary institutions, were handed over to the Ukrainian side.

The State Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the DPR Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office, in accordance with the Decree of the Head of the Republic, and with the aim of implementing the Package of Measures for the Implementation of the Minsk Agreements, transferred prisoners to serve their sentence in the territory of Ukraine.

“Today, pursuant to the Decree of the Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic No. 424 of 12.11.2015 “On the Transfer of Sentenced Persons who serve their sentence in penitentiary institutions of the Donetsk People’s Republic, and criminal case files kept in the courts and DPR investigative bodies to the territory of Ukraine”, we handed over prisoners who expressed a desire to serve their sentence in the territory of Ukraine. The procedure of transferring 19 convicts took place without incident,” reported by the DPR Ombudsman press-service.

It is to be recalled that this was not the first transfer of convicts. In total, the Donetsk People’s Republic handed over 166 convicts to Ukraine.
